Prahran Skate Stars

In the 80s and 90s, there were locals at Prahran Bowl who were famous around Melbourne for being for the best street skaters the city had ever seen. Competition was very intense. For an ambitious rookie skater entering the scene - it was almost like you needed a friend at the Bowl as entrance to the scene. Rookie skaters needed to be introduced to the locals, taught which parts of the bowl were best to learn on and when to avoid the intense 'Snake Sessions' that would go down on busy days.

*In skate terminology 'Snake Sessions' means times when skaters would skate very competitively with absolutely no regard for anyone in the way. To find out more... Check out Part 1 of the Story at the Link Here!

The Center of Skate Media Focus

From around 1990, Prahran Bowl became the center of skate media attention nationwide. From local zines, to magazine stores, skate shops and even features on mainstream TV...

Prahran Bowl was Center Stage

A Key to Stardom

It was the place where all Street Skaters from Australia aspired to go - travelling long distances to experience its Street Culture from every corner of the continent. Making a name for oneself at Prahran Bowl, was a key to stardom all across Australia. If a skater was scouted at Prahran Bowl and deemed with the right level of talent - they would be quickly snapped up. Offered multiple sponsorships and their names and photographs in print nationwide.

The Original Prahran Ramp was home-base to a small group of Vert Skateboarding Prodigies. Renton Millar was one of these prodigies who pushed his talents beyond - achieving international success and acclaim. Raising the bar higher and higher and paving the way for the future of Australian Vert Skateboarding.

The Original Prahran Vert Ramp

The Vert Ramp (Vert meaning Vertical or referring to 'Big Ramp') sat right in front of the Bowl. By the late 80s, Prahran Vert Skaters had already had become famous internationally - despite close to zero video or magazine coverage of Australia overseas. By the 90s the level of innovation on Prahran Vert Ramp was out of control - pushing to new extremes.

Never Been Done Tricks at Prahran

The USA was and always has definitely the source of 'Never Been Done Tricks' (NBDs) being the source for skateboarding innovation worldwide. Although surprisingly, I witnessed many 'Never Been Done Tricks' on both Prahran Vert Ramp and Bowl in the early 90s.

Wonder & Intense Ambition

One of the most amazing things about Prahran Bowl in the 90s was the intense ambition and a sense of wonder the skaters possessed. During the scene's peak many of Prahran's famous skaters tried with all their might to reach the USA levels of skateboarding ability.

A drawing by Sean Kavanagh of Jason 'Buzza' Burrows doing a backside lipslide
on a handrail from a platform on Prahran Basketball Courts. The drawing is in black and white with a gestural quality - showing the character of Jason Burrows.

I did a fast sketch of Jason Burrows skating Prahran Bowl Basketball Courts from a classic photo from the early 90s. You can see an impression of the Vert Ramp in the background. I wanted the marks to reflect Jason's movement and artistic style. I was thinking of adding watercolor to the pencil work, but might do that later. Read can more about Jason here... Jason 'Buzza' Burrows.

No Internet or Mobile Phones

The internet as means of communication was still years ahead in the future, nobody had mobile phones to record video and the source of inspiration was entirely through print magazines, photos and VHS videos. Owning a video camera was very rare at the time. Via telephone land lines, some skaters did have access to long distance telephone calls to professional skaters in the States. Although this was very rare, as long-distance telephone calls cost more than a teenager could manage at the time.

Curiosity About the World

Removed and almost isolated from the world, stories about skating in the USA would circulate by word of mouth. What was going on in San Francisco… What was going on in LA... or New York. Many of these stories were based on reading articles or impressions combined with imagination and were often met with looks of astonishment and wonder. Skaters at Prahran Bowl did not have the self-belief of being at a USA professional level. Although many really, really tried with all their heart.

Pioneer Street Skating Scene

Prahran Bowl was perhaps the first Street Skating Scene in Australia that was starting to reach beyond the separation of oceans closer to the amazing levels of rapid progress set in the United States. (Vert Skating at Prahran had already reached international professional level by the late 80s.)

“Prahran Bowl was perhaps the first Street Skating Scene in Australia that was starting to reach beyond the separation of oceans closer to the amazing levels of rapid progress set in the United States. ”

Photo of Ashley Popov from the 1980s doing an Ollie Grab above the edge of Prahran Bowl.
It is almost night and somebody is holding a bright flash to assist the photographer next to the bowl.

Photograph by Tony Roberts

Ashley Popov was well-known in the Prahran Scene for his bold, innovative and powerful style. He was one of Melbourne's early new school Street Skaters to raise the level of what had previously been imagined possible.

Foundations of Australian Skate History

History was going down every day in the late afternoons and evenings at the bowl and nearby streets. Many of the stories of what was happening in the scene and new tricks Prahran Skaters had made would be recorded in Australian Skate Magazines nationwide.

Dreams of Making It in the USA

Some of the original Prahran Pioneer Skaters did take a huge leap to relocate to the States and turn professional later in the 90s. This was an almost unthinkable achievement at the time - mainly due to the fact that there was very little magazine or video coverage of Australian skaters available in the USA.

“It all started with Prahran Bowl - its street culture and competitive push for creativity vibrating outward from its smooth, flowing circular waves. Those vibratory waves continuing to influence Street Culture History to this day.”

Image of Andrew Currie doing a very high Ollie - 4 to 5ft in the air over the hip at Prahran Bowl.
There is a small crowd of skaters sitting in the background watching. Andrew is wearing a beanie style hat and baggy extra-large jeans.

Photograph by David Walsh

During the 90s and 2000s, Andrew Currie was one of the key figures influencing the development of skateboarding history in Australia. In a similar way to Gregor Rankine - through his position as editor-in-chief at Slam Skateboarding Magazine, he single-handedly propelled the standard of skate media to an international level. Without Andrew Currie, skateboarding in Australia would not be what it is today. I like this photo of Andrew at Prahran Bowl, because it encapsulates his timeless, powerful all-terrain street-style in one image.

A Center for Street Culture

With an increasingly competitive skate scene, Prahran Bowl's reputation spread far and wide throughout the city and nationwide. It not only became a central meeting spot for skaters, but also some of Melbourne's most well-known graffiti artists and DJs. There was a blending of fashion, street art and music surrounding the area. Senior members of the graffiti and hip-hop scenes would teach the skaters about the latest imports of mixtapes, CDs, collectables and sneakers which they had sourced directly from the States.

Magnetic Attraction in the Streets

The level of street culture activity was magnetic and attracted many retail outlets close to the center of the scene. Prahran was packed with Skate Shops, Streetwear Outlets, Cyber-Style fashion stores, Select Vinyl Collections, Hip-Hop outlets, DJ Equipment distributors and specialty Techno Importers for the city's Rave Scene.

Black and White photo of Adrian Powell doing a Frontside Heel Flip on a large enbankment at Prahran Bowl.
Adrian is wearing classic 90s skate wear... A baseball cat, baggy jeans and Adidas Gazelle sneakers.

Photograph by Jesse Featherstone

Adrian Powell - Frontside Heel Flip on the big wall at Prahran. In a similar way to how people in modern times, take photos at famous landmarks for display on social media... In the early 90s, Prahran Bowl became a hot spot for visiting skaters from around Australia to film footage or take photos. I like this photo of Adrian Powell, as it captures the influence of American Fashion at the time that was so popular.

Prahran Bowl's Vibratory Waves

While all this activity may seem chaotic and disparate, it wasn't. I believe it all started with Prahran Bowl - its street culture and competitive push for creativity vibrating outward from its smooth, flowing circular waves. Those vibratory waves continuing to influence Street Culture History to this day. Prahran Bowl was the source.

Always Looking Beyond the Oceans

We live in a time now, where anyone with even an inkling of knowledge on a topic, is more than willing to advertise it to the whole world via social media. At a time in history when nobody across the world could hear of their achievements - the skaters at Prahran Bowl were in a way, insecure and uncertain of their abilities... Always hungry and ambitious to bridge the gap of what they saw in America. Whatever doubts they had regarding their own ability was exceeded by their talent, creativity and innovation.

Black and white photo of Jason Carney doing a backside tailslide (or possibly frontside bluntsie transfer)
on a handrail at Prahran Basketball Courts. The handrail is part of a platform that was used on the day for a skate demonstration.
David Walsh is in the background holding a camera and wearing cap backwards. There are many spectators, sitting watching Jason on the edge of the court.

Photograph by Jesse Featherstone

Jason Carney was a USA professional skater internationally famous for pushing the limits of technical street skating in the 90s to new horizons. I was fortunate to skate together with him in this Planet Earth Skateboards demonstration at Prahran Bowl Basketball Courts. You can see a photo of me skating on the day at the LINK HERE. I wanted to ask him questions, so that I could learn about skating and how to do tricks from him. Although due to shyness, I skated quietly alongside him observing his technical finesse.

Decline of Activity in the Mid 90s

By the mid to late 90s, while still an active skate spot, Prahran Bowl's magnetic energy - drawing attention from all around the country had started to fade. Other singular hubs had started to appear closer to the city and in other parts of the land - but none were ever the same as the Original Prahran Bowl.

The Characters That Made It Special

I suppose looking back to the 80s and 90s, it was not only the place itself which was special, but perhaps more important were the characters, talents and artists who frequented the place and made the place famous far and wide. As one pioneer disappeared or moved on to other horizons, so did another and pretty soon Prahran Bowl was but a shadow of what made it a landmark in Street Culture History.

Shadows of its Legendary Past

For the skaters who remained there was a sense of loss. With so many memories and stories of skaters who once competed with all their heart to make a name for themselves there. The bowl still existed, but gone was its intense cutting-edge creative energy.

“It is most definitely certain - that the scene in its original form will be remembered... As one of the founding sources of Skateboarding and Street Culture History in Australia. ”

Black and white photo of Dean Sammut doing a fakie ollie over wooden and metal rail obstacle in the middle of
Prahran Bowl. Dean is mid-air - floating above the obstacle. Spectators look on around the perimeter of the bowl.

Photograph by David Walsh

Dean Sammut was known for his mastery of Street Skating demonstrations exciting large crowds all over the city. Prahran Bowl did not have many of the obstacles similar to modern skateparks. Prahran skaters often used trash cans, cement curbs, recycled rubbish and found items to learn tricks on. During competitions and demonstrations extra ramps and obstacles were often added to the bowl as pictured in this photo. You can read more about Dean at the LINK HERE.

Bright yellow skateboard wheel with text on tthe circumference of the wheel reading...
TOKYO BREATHLESS NEON LOVE in a mint green color.

Via the photographic collection of Renton Millar

A classic photograph of Renton Millar from the 1980s. Weekday afternoons at Prahran often turned into what seemed like skate demonstrations - drawing spectators from all over the city. During the late 80s and early 90s, Prahran Bowl was a destination for crowds of people visiting to witness history taking place.

Changes & Additions in the 2000s

In the 2000s, additions were made to Bowl which while highly creative and very well intentioned, obstructed the natural flow of movement for skaters at the Original Bowl. While ambitious in design for the time, it mainly pushed skaters away.

State-Of-The-Art Skate Park in 2024

In 2024, Prahran Bowl was completely remodeled into a state-of-the-art Street and Vert Skatepark - combining all types of terrain - into one seamless modern design - far beyond what the Original Prahran Bowl locals could had ever imagined.

Legacy in Skateboarding & Street Culture History

I believe if some of original Prahran Bowls Pioneers had travelled fast forward in time... To get to see and skate the variety of obstacles on offer at the new park... They would be in complete shock!
While most of the innovation that occurred at Prahran Bowl was never recorded... It is most definitely certain - that the scene in its original form will be remembered... As one of the founding sources of Skateboarding and Street Culture History in Australia.

Although the Original Prahran Bowl no longer exists, remaining in the realm of history and legend - it still lives on the hearts of those that lived and experienced it.

I hope that through reading this story - you have experienced it too.
