Imagine yourself standing looking down a smooth cement slope reaching into the shape of light gray dish with smooth forms on the side - encircling in concrete waves. The air is dry and the temperature is tipping over 100 degrees (38° Celsius). You hear the sound of urethane wheels rolling and metallic trucks grinding against harsh cement. From behind you there are constant soundwaves of kids laughing, as they splash plunging into the crystal-clear aquamarine waters of a large public pool.

There is a slight breeze and beads of sweat run down your forehead and neck as you look around. The smell of dusty concrete, soil and dry tanbark drifts softly in the air. Your hand doesn't even shift to look at your mobile phone to check the new posts on the internet - as that doesn't even exist yet.

You see twenty to thirty young teenagers dressed in clothes that are dissimilar to other young people in the city - frayed baggy double XL denim jeans, t-shirts with bold graphic prints, vibrant colors, caps with peculiar embroidered logos and imported accessories. They yell and taunt each other using unusual jargon, both extremely competitive and semi-encouraging.

They ride their boards into this fluid gray disc and fly out 4 to 5 feet in the air. Spectators look out in amazement as the young people perform feats on the cutting edge, nobody in surrounding areas has seen. There is an atmosphere in the air of progression and creativity reaching far beyond the oceans of the continent. You can feel excitement in the air and get the feeling you are witnessing a creative movement reverberating into the future changing the course of street culture history.

It is the year 1990 and you are standing at the edge of Prahran Bowl.

Al moved from the Gold Coast to Melbourne in the early 90s. He filmed and edited two skate videos for the famous Snake Pit - 'Tongue Biters' and 'Nancy Squad' before moving to the USA. Other cutting-edge skaters from all over Australia and New Zealand also moved to live, skate and immerse themselves in Prahran's Culture during the early 90s.

A Piece of Street History

Prahran Bowl was one of Australia's early skateparks built in the late 70s - very close to Melbourne's busy Chapel Street Shopping District on Malvern Road.

Australia's Version of Embarcadero

It was believed by many to be Australia's version of San Francisco's Embarcadero Plaza - a creative center for Street Skating in the Southern Hemisphere.

Embarcadero - also known as EMB was the place where the world of street skating looked towards for inspiration. It was the center of skating globally and a place every street skater dreamt of visiting even if only once. It was also a place of extreme levels of technical innovation, where many of the tricks in the world of street skating today were first created.

EMB - International Center for 90s Street Skating

In the 90s, if a Street Skater became famous at Embarcadero it was similar to an actor hitting the A-List in Hollywood. Whatever happened at EMB went worldwide. It was the singular focus of skate media attention at the time.

You can find out more about EMB (Embarcadero) in the book Epicenter by Jacob Rosenberg at the LINK HERE.

Isolated by Distant Oceans

In contrast, Prahran Bowl was unknown to much of the world - as the location was isolated by thousands of miles beyond distant oceans. Existing at a time when there was no social media, no mobile phones, no internet, no DVDs, no digital media and very little video or magazine coverage of the Southern Hemisphere. Any mention of Prahran Bowl was purely by mouth by professional skaters who had visited Australia.

Even then perhaps, to people not in the know...
Describing a remote skate spot in Australia probably conjured up images of a dusty outback bowl with kangaroos hopping around in the background.

Although, it was not that at all.

TOKYO BREATHLESS NEON LOVE

Center for Street Culture

There was much more going on in this isolated hub of street culture than the world ever knew at the time. It was a hub of activity in skateboarding, graffiti, music and street fashion - a pulse of energy where creativity flowed from the Bowl into all areas of Street Culture throughout the city and nationwide.

The Structure of Prahran Bowl

The architecture of the design was surprisingly simple - a circular dish shape with a small fluid snake shaped path (snake run) attached leading to its entrance. Initially the bowl was not completely cemented on its outer periphery and was surrounded with grass and soil all the way up to its edge. Sometime in the 80s, the outer area of the bowl was concreted allowing people to skate around the edges and into the bowl.

Fluid Waves & Shredded Concrete

Although, beyond the simplicity lay a near perfect circular flow - containing many complex fluid waves - all with unique and different characteristics. It was rough around the edges, with shredded concrete coping and mellow transitions, as well as volatile tighter waves in small less skated areas. ('Coping' means the edge of a bowl or pool in skate terminology)

Packed with Crowds

During its early years Prahran Bowl was frequented by a mix of BMXers, Skateboarders, Scooter Riders and in later years Rollerbladers. I sometimes actually even saw Roller Skaters practicing rolling into the bowl, which was certainly no mean feat!

“The early 90's Melbourne Oz scene was quietly one of the best on Earth at the time.”

Southern Hemisphere Central Hub for Skating

Although from the mid-80s to the beginning of the 1990s it started to become a central hub for skateboarding in Australia. Whenever a professional skate tour started in Australia… Prahran Vert Ramp and Bowl were the first stop... The landmark to announce the start of the tour and… The first point of contact for professional skaters from USA landing in Australia. It was also the home of some of the most spectacular skate demonstrations Australia had ever seen during the era.

Rapid Innovation - Prahran Bowl in the 80s

In the 80s, I remember visiting Prahran Bowl and was blown away by what I saw. The level of skateboarding was much more advanced than I had seen anywhere else in Melbourne. I noticed that people could Ollie much higher than I had seen before - except for videos imported from the USA. ('Ollie' is the trick or method of how street skaters go into the air.) People would Ollie flying out of the bowl near head height... Over all sorts of improvised obstacles fire hydrants, large tall green trash bins, objects stacked on top of each other and shopping trolleys. I was in complete shock!

It is not easy to see from this perspective, but Troy is clearing a huge long-distance gap from Prahran's Snake Run into the bowl. Troy is wearing a 'Mocean' T-shirt - one of Prahran's most popular skate shops at the time and a big part of the scene.

The Infamous Snake Sessions

It was very intimidating for a beginner to learn to skate in the bowl, as in the 80s, the bowl was home to many very intense Snake Sessions. A 'Snake Session' is where multiple skaters would ride skateparks aggressively crossing paths in a hypercompetitive fashion. Anyone in the way of a well-known skater that was considered to be a poser or nuisance just waiting to be knocked out of the way. ('Poser' was 80s slang for wannabe skaters.)

From the perspective of little kid like myself - trying to skate Prahran Bowl on a packed day was like entering the movie 'Rollerball'.
