90s Skater Gallery

Dean Sammut was one of the founding pioneers of Street Skating in Australia. In the 80s Street Skating did exist, although as an artform in itself - it was still partly mixed with Bowl, Pool, Vert and Mixed Ramp Style Obstacles. As the end of the 80s met the 90s, a whole new style of skateboarding emerged - and Dean was at the forefront of the movement in Australia.

When I was very little and learning to skate, 'The Ollie' (which is the main way street skaters go into the air) - was still a new concept. Not everyone around me could do it and people would measure how well they could Ollie by stacking skateboards on top of each other to see how high they could go. Although at that time, Dean could already do more than Ollie…

He Could Really Fly

A Glimpse of The Future at the Fun Factory

At the twilight of the 80s, a Powell Peralta video premiere was held at the Fun Factory - a super popular roller-skating rink filled with all sorts of games and attractions. The first level of the building was filled with arcade games. Amongst the blips and beeps of Galaga and Dragon's Lair, a large screen had been set up with an area for people to sit on the ground to watch the video. At the end of the premier, I saw a crowd of learner skateboarders follow one person out into the streets to see the newest tricks first hand - Dean Sammut.

Many kids looked to Dean, as one of the first people in Melbourne who could skate street like the professionals in the States. There was no such thing as followers on social media then, but if you saw a group of kids literally following a skater around - that was good sign that they were a Street Star.

A Turbo-Charged Style

Dean skated really fast and didn't really just session at one single spot, but rode the whole city like a series of waves. Flying through whole streets, like drawing a fluid endless stroke on a canvas, as he made his mark on big obstacles - stairs, ledges, gaps and handrails.

Setting the Foundation for Future Generations

Dean also used his talent for skateboarding by encouraging the up-and-coming generation of skaters to learn and develop. I was among those kids he helped and encouraged. After skating with Dean, I not only learned to Ollie much higher, but much further through the air - a characteristic of Dean's high-flying style.

The First Australian Street Skater with Major American Sponsors

Dean was also the first Street Skater in Australia to be sponsored by major American companies - Santa Cruz, Independent Trucks, OJ Wheels and Vision Street Wear (amongst many others sponsors in Australia). Something that was unheard of at the time.

While researching this story I found quite a lot of photos and writing about Dean by Tony Roberts - Videographer of the Classic Video 'Risk It'. I got the sense that Dean Sammut had made a big impression on Tony like the world-famous skaters he filmed in the States. At a time when Street Skating was really in its infancy, Dean's high-flying style set the foundation for the future development of Street Style in Australia.

ディーン・サミュットは、オーストラリアのストリートスケートの先駆者の一人でした。 ８０年代にはストリートスケートが現在していましたが、それ自体が芸術式としては、ボウル、プール、ランプスタイルが部分的にまだミックスされていました。 ８０年代の終わりから９０年代にかけて、まったく新しいスタイルのスケートボードが登場し、ディーンはオーストラリアにおけるそのムーブメントのリーダーの一人になりました。

私がスケートを習っていた子供の頃、「オーリー」（ストリートスケーターが空中に飛び上がる主な技）はまだ新しいコンセプトでした。 周りのスケーター全員ができるわけではなかったです。スケーターたちはスケートボードを積み重ねて、どれだけ高く飛べるかを競い、オーリーの上手さを測っていました。 しかし、当時、ディーンはオーリーよりも多くのことすること...　彼は本当に飛ぶことができました。

８０年代の終わり頃、ゲームと楽しいものがいっぱいの超人気ローラースケートリンク、FUN FACTORY「ファンファクトリー」で、 パウエルペラルタのビデオプレミア上映会が開催されました。建物の一階はアーケードゲームでいっぱいでした。 ギャラガ「Galaga」とドラゴンズレア「Dragon's Lair] の点滅音の中で、大きなスクリーンが設置され、スケーターたちが地面に座ってビデオを鑑賞できるエリアもありました。 ビデオプレミア上映の終わりに、スケーターの初心者たちが、ディーン・サミュットという人物を追って通りに出て、最新のトリックを直接見るのを目にしました。 多くの子供たちは、メルボルンで初めてアメリカのプロのようにストリートでスケートができる人の一人としてディーンに注目していました。 当時のソーシャルメディアにはフォロワーというものはなかったが、スケーターの後ろに追いかける初心者のスケーターのグループを見たら、 それはその人がストリートでスターである証拠でした。

Jason Burrows also known as 'Buzza' or 'Buzz' was easily one of the most naturally talented Street Skaters in Australia during the 90s. Like in my article about Ryan Denereaz, 'Buzz' did many tricks that were far ahead of the time that were never recorded in print or on video. I actually think he was on a similar level of natural ability and skill as Ryan, although they were different types of skaters.

An Amazing All Terrain Talent

Jason could skate almost any type of obstacle and had an ability to skate on very rugged terrain, without any awareness of the fact that what he was doing was almost impossible.

He was famous for skating at Prahran Bowl, almost literally every day. I think he was definitely at a professional level, at a time when it was virtually impossible to be a Professional Street Skater in Australia working internationally.

I think skateboarders are in a way like a family. If that is so, then Jason and I were like two brothers that never got along. We would squabble and argue about literally anything and everything. When we skated together you couldn't really call them skate sessions, but more like 'Skate Battles.' As I was a very shy person with a soft voice, I wasn't very good at squabbling. So often I would go and practice and learn a new trick for hours every day on the streets around my home, just to purposefully upset Buzz when I returned to Prahran Bowl a week later.

Years later on a visit to Australia from Japan, I bumped into Buzz in the city, where he was excited to tell me about the movie 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon'. I was so happy to see him. Jason would often put a perfectly formed molded cement curb in the center of Prahran Basketball court and we would learn tricks together we had seen in videos from America - it was so fun. I was lucky to get to skate with him at that time.
