Pioneer of Sydney Street Style - Alex Smith

The Awakening of a New Era of Skating in Sydney

Around the year 1990, I would travel to Sydney to explore the city's energetic skate scene. I would take a backpack with my helmet and pads, so that I could skate the wooden Vert Ramp at Bondi Beach. I had a friend called Bart Carnes, who was well known for his stand-out skills on Sydney's Vert Ramps. Regardless of being able to do only very basic and simple things on the Vert Ramp, Bart would encourage me and spent a lot of time talking to me. This was unusual at the time, as Vert Skaters were really the stars of Australian Skateboarding. For me skating Vert was very intimidating and he helped me overcome my fear.

Appearance of a Skater with Stand-Out Style

Bart probably noticed that most of what I talked about was related to the new type Street Skating that was happening in the States. One day, a very distinct looking Street Skater cruised up to Vert Ramp at high speed and Bart took me straight to meet him. His name was Alex Smith. We talked for few moments, before Alex sped off down the boulevard at Bondi - doing very technical flip tricks at high speed. I remember noticing that his fashion was very different to everybody else and he had an ability to do tricks I had never seen anybody else do in Sydney. His style and ability really stood out.

１９９０年頃、私はシドニーの活気あるスケートシーンを体験しに、現地へ足を運んでいました。 ボンダイ・ビーチのバーチカル・ランプ（ハーフパイプ）でスケートするように、ヘルメットとパッドを入れたバックパックを持って行きました。 バート・カーンズ「BART CARNES」という友人がいて、彼はシドニーのハーフパイプでのスキルでよく知られていました。 ハーフパイプでごく基本的なことしかしていなかったにも関わらず、バートは私を励まし、長い時間を割いて話をしました。 当時、オーストラリアのスケート界の主役といえば「ハーフパイプ・スケーター」だったため、これは異例のことでした。 私にとって、バーチカルのハーフパイプでスケートすることは恐ろしいものでしたが、彼のおかげでその恐怖を克服することができました。 バートは、私が話したことの大部分が、アメリカで流行していた新しいタイプのストリート・スケート・スタイルに関するものだったことに気づいた。 ある日、それまで見たこともないストリートスケーターがハイスピードでハーフパイプの近くにに滑り込んできて、バートはすぐに私に彼を紹介しようとしました。 そのストリートスケーターの名前は、アレックス・スミス「ALEX SMITH」でした。少し言葉を交わした後、アレックスはボンダイ・ビーチの遊歩道をスケートボードでスピーディーに滑り去っていました。 アレックスは高速で、複雑なテクニカル・フリップ・トリックを繰り出していました。 彼のファッションが他の誰とも大きく異なっていたことと、シドニーでは誰もしていないようなトリックを繰り出す才能を持っていたことに気づいたのを覚えています。アレックスのスタイルと実力は、際立っていました。

当時、シドニーにストリート・スケートは存在していましたが、 ハーフパイプ、プール、ビッグ・ボウルといったスタイルの圧倒的な人気に完全に押されており、単に　「脇役」的な存在と見なされていました。 シドニーで「モダーン・テクニカル・ストリート・スケート」がまさに始まったばかりの頃、その街のスケートボードの将来を変えつつあるとして、耳にしていた名前がいくつかありました。 アレックス・スミスは、間違いなくその一人でした。 彼は、今日目にするようなテクニカル・ストリート・トリックの多くをこなすことができました。 当時は、アメリカを除けば、南半球においてそれほど高いスキル・レベルは極めて珍しいことだったのです。

Redefining the Future of Technicality

Street Skating did exist in Sydney, although it was most definitely overshadowed by the immense popularity of Vert, Pool and Big Bowl skating - Street Skating was still considered a sideline. It was right at the very beginning of Modern Technical Street Skating in Sydney and there were a few names I had heard of who were changing the future of Skateboarding in the city. Alex Smith was definitely one of those names. He was able to do many of the technical street tricks that we see today, during a time when except for in the States, that level of technicality was very rare in the southern hemisphere.

Speed Skating Through Inner City Streets

I would travel a few times a year to visit Sydney where I would skate and hang out with Alex. We would blast through the streets of Paddington, doing tricks we practiced together over obstacles and against the harsh cement through busy inner-city streets. Alex would always push himself to take what he had learnt on the flatground to the next level - onto ledges and over huge sets of stairs.

年に数回シドニーを訪れ、そこでアレックスと一緒にスケートをしていました。 私たちはパディントンの街中を猛スピードで駆け抜け、都心の混雑する通りで、硬いコンクリートを相手に二人で練習したトリックを次々と練習しました。 アレックスは常に、フラットグラウンドで身につけた技をさらに上のレベルと引き上げようと挑み続け、レッジと巨大な階段といった場所でもそれを実践しようとしていました。 アレックスはファッションに強い関心を持っており、ストリートウェアの選び方においては時代をはるかに先取りしていました。 彼のスタイルは実に個性的で、他のスケーターなら気後れして着ないような、大胆で強烈な色使いのコーディネートを身にまとっている姿をよく見かけたものです。 アレックスはシドニーのテクノ、ヒップホップ、ナイトライフのシーンにも詳しくており、次の何が大きくなブームになるかを見抜くアンテナも張っていました。 アレックスはシドニーのインナーシティー・ストリートカルチャーにおける有名人でした。

それから長い年月が経った２０１０年代、私はシドニーの街角でよくアレックスと偶然を合わせるようになりました。 アレックスと話すたびに感じたのは、ストリートカルチャーの将来に対する、あの鋭いアンテナを彼が依然としてもち続けているということでした。 彼は、世界のスケートボードの当時の現状をどう捉えていたか、そして今後どのような方向に向かっていくと考えていたかについて説明しました。 当時のアレックスの考えとアイデア、そして抱いていた印象を振り返ってみると、彼はまさに正解だったと思います。

一緒にスケートをした友人たちとの経験について物語を書くたびに、私は自分の過去について学んでいるのだと思います。 時折、過去を振り返って、もっと学んでおけばよかったと思うことがあります。 ディーン・サミュットについてのストーリ（リンクはこちら）とように、もし学んでいたら自身の成長の助けになったであろうことがいくつかあります。 あるいは、もしアメリカでスケートを学ぶ機会を活かしていたらどうなっていただろうか、と考えることもありました（その話はこちらで読めます）。 しかし、今の自分の運命にまさにそうなるべくしてそうなったのだと理解しており、これまでの経験に感謝しています。 こうした話を書きながら、私はこれまでに出会った数多くの素晴らしい人たちについて、新たなことを学んでいます。 このストーリに関して言えば、アレックス・スミスと多くの時間を共にし、 彼の未来を見据えた視点から世界を眺めることができたのは嬉しい経験であり、その体験は今も私の中に息づいています。

A Perceptive Mind for Future Trends

Alex was very interested in fashion and was way ahead of his time in his selection of streetwear. His style was eclectic - I would often see him wearing bold intense colors in coordinates other skaters were too shy to wear. He also knew a lot about Sydney's Techno, Hip Hop and Nightlife scene and had a very perceptive sense of what was going to be the next big thing. He was like a celebrity within Sydney's Inner City Street Culture.

Meeting Alex in the 2010s

Many years later in the 2010s, I would often bump into Alex on the streets of Sydney. Whenever I spoke to him, he still had that keen futuristic sense of perception and would identify things on the cutting-edge with sharp accuracy. He explained to me how he saw the current state of skateboarding in the world and where he saw it going in the future. Looking back to his thoughts, ideas and impressions at the time - I would say he was exactly right.

Learning From My Past Experiences

I suppose that every time I write stories about my experience meeting skaters that I spent time with - I am learning about my past. Sometimes I look back and wish I had learnt more... Although I know that my destiny is exactly as it is meant to be now and am grateful for the experiences I have. By writing these stories, I am learning new lessons about the many amazing people I have met. In the case of this story - I am happy that I did get to spend a lot of time with Alex Smith and getting to see the world from his futuristic perspective - is an experience that is still with me today.
